Much work has gone into enhancing the facilities in the whole area and much of the budget has been spent on expanding the quality of practical equipment. The successful candidate will join the Science team at a time when our key aim is to ensure that students experience of Science is as real-life and as practical as possible. The Subject Area The Science curriculum area currently has eight full-time staff including a faculty leader, and three part-time staff along with four Science technicians. Further line management and partnership for Quality Improvement of the subject area is provided by a Deputy Headteacher who is a member of the School Leadership Group. There are eight Science laboratories equipped with computers, a bank of laptops and data logging equipment. All Science staff have access to their own laptop and all laboratories are fitted with data projectors and all have interactive whiteboards. Staff also make use of the suites of computers available as part of the extensive technology resources within the school. We teach a condensed KS3 curriculum in years 7 and 8 following the scheme of work that has been developed by the school. In September 2009 we introduced the new and exciting Wikid Science scheme which has established the school as a leader in innovative curriculum developments. In KS3, students currently have one Science teacher throughout the year and 6 one hour lessons per fortnight. Students follow the AQA GCSE Science specification throughout years 9 to 11. All students follow Core Science A GCSE during year 9, Additional Science in Year 10 and then in Year 11 most will complete a triple science course. There is an excellent uptake of the Sciences in year 12 at AS level, with a high percentage of students continuing to complete the A2. A number of students go on to a variety of Higher Education courses involving further study of Science. Various other opportunities are made available to students to enhance their learning, including guest speakers, work experience visits and alternative curricular activities. There is also a successful after-school Science and Engineering Club. Students complete various projects and enter a number of national competitions. Thinking Schools The Weald of Kent is committed to developing fully the independent thinking skills possessed by our students. We commenced in September 2011 our journey towards becoming officially accredited as a Thinking School. Our whole staff have been trained in the use of Hyerle's Thinking Maps and the first ten of Tony Ryan's Thinkers' Keys. Thunks are used throughout the school to stimulate our students' thinking. We aim to develop our students' ability to move from sharing what they know to how they know something. All staff throughout the school are expected to engage with our work as a Thinking School and use thinking methodologies in their lessons.
