About us
We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment and make it a better place for people and wildlife. We operate at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We reduce the risks to people and properties from flooding; make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate.
The role
The challenges we face today are huge, and it’s vital that we’re making best use of our funding and budget to deliver more for people and the environment. And that’s exactly what you’ll help us to do, locally and nationally, by delivering a comprehensive, high quality business finance service.
Our remit – and therefore your work – is fascinatingly varied: working closely with head office and regional colleagues, you’ll ensure that we’re delivering the biggest hit for our hard-pressed finances. This could be on a capital scheme that protects people and property against floods, or whether to support a partnership project that could protect habitat for water voles. You’ll also work with external partners, the likes of Local Authorities and Rivers’ Trusts, to secure funding to meet our environmental objectives.
Our overall budget is more than £1billion and your leadership and financial expertise will be critical in defining, developing and formulating financial management strategies, policies and plans to support business targets. As well as championing the highest standards of financial stewardship and propriety, you’ll identify and manage risks to the delivery of finance objectives, ensuring that we’re operating in a business-like way.
About you
You’ll thrive on the opportunity to apply your financial expertise to help create a better place for people and wildlife. CIMA, CIPFA or ACCA qualified, you’ll have proven business leadership experience within a similarly large, diverse organisation. Which means that you’ll be confident managing a considerable budget, and skilled in high-level scenario planning and forecasting. You’re likely to have a public sector/NGO background, so you’ll be familiar with relevant governance rules when it comes to funding. Credible and knowledgeable, you’re used to working at director and/or board level. You’re insightful and perceptive too, with the confidence to challenge colleagues and suggest a different way where you see fit. And as well as inspiring senior colleagues and stakeholders, you’ve a real talent for leading and developing teams.
In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits and the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment. We are committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working patterns, including job share. Please highlight any information regarding preferred flexible working arrangements on your application.
