Software Engineer, Software Developer - PHP, MySQL or Oracle, Linux, Apache, experience with C, C++, Java, C# or similar is advantageous as is Web Developer skills HTML, CSS - based Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, excellent package including up to £45K+ basic plus benefits package.

My client is an international global financial information supplying leader and technology company which delivers a comprehensive set of products and services designed to meet the needs of the front, middle and back offices at some of the largest and most well-known financial institutions around the world.

Due to expansion and client demand they currently seek a talented and ambitious Softwware Engineer / Software Developer - the role involves developing new applications as well as maintaining and enhancing established productive components, and working with other developers internationally to formulate and ratify technical concepts. Team members must be able to communicate their ideas via concept documents, white papers, which can then be used in subsequent development projects. The role may also involve taking the lead on development projects from time to time, chairing technical meetings and running an occasional presentation.

Most of the coding work will require strong PHP skills. However, a solid grounding in good software engineering is vital to this role. Also, as all our internal tools are generally web-based, a familiarity with web technologies and HTML/CSS are highly valued. UK Core IT also maintains its own development servers and manages its own services, so familiarity with the Linux environment is helpful. Besides PHP, the role also involves working with MySQL and apache in a Linux environment. In some cases other languages and database software may be used. UK Core IT still maintains some components based on proprietary servers and written in TCL, but generally IDMS is moving away from proprietary servers. UK Core IT is also involved in a number of Java developments.

Ideal candidate profile - Strong degree in IT (1st or 2-1), 5 years experience in programming, Experience of developing in compiled languages (C, C++, Java or similar), Experience of developing in scripting languages, particularly PHP , Database administration experience, ideally Oracle or MySQL , Experience of working in a small team with tight deadlines across multiple projects, Experience of working within a matrix-managed project environment, Experience of working within a code audit/test environment, Industrial experience of testing & code optimisation using formal techniques, Experience of team leadership (professional or otherwise)
