Brief Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated, self-motivated, highly skilled Senior Storage Engineer to work in a team of engineers supporting the storage infrastructure for highly transactional and highly available products. This is an excellent opportunity to join a new team providing world-class storage and backup infrastructure for a dynamic and fast-moving company.

Description

The team is responsible for Betfair's entire production, staging, and development storage infrastructure, including SAN and NAS based storage arrays, SAN Switches, JBODs and storage reporting and monitoring tools. The team also maintains the backup infrastructure and is responsible for the success of all backups.

Future challenges include the automation of storage provisioning and backups, capacity monitoring and planning, and performance testing and capacity planning. The successful candidate will have excellent technical and trouble-shooting skills, be willing and able to drive continual improvements in all areas, an active interest in the IT industry, and a positive, results driven attitude.

Responsibilities:

* Build, manage, and maintain 100s of TB of storage (currently Netapp/HDS), including provisioning, performance tuning, and capacity planning. Majority of storage is NAS (NFS and iSCSI), some SAN.

* Manage and maintain a world-wide Netbackup 7 infrastructure

* Fault-diagnosis and fixing of critical systems under pressure and short timescales

* Designing, documenting, and improving existing environments

* Automating, updating and improving process, procedures, and deployment templates

* Mentoring other engineers in the team to build and scale the infrastructure for growth, security, and resilience

* Proactively maintaining infrastructure to prevent failures

* Writing and updating documentation on all areas of responsibility Leading storage projects from planning to conclusion

* Creation and roll-out of standards

Skills & Attributes

* Excellent communication skills and an ability to communicate and manage expectations under pressure

* Proven reporting and troubleshooting skills, must always see a problem through to its root cause and resolution

* Keen to improving tooling and automation to create a highly scalable environment

* Attention to detail, with focus on planning, testing and carefully controlled implementation

* Prepared to meet measurable targets for uptime and performance

* Building and maintaining multi-vendor/heterogeneous environments

* Ability to work with non-technical business staff to root cause operational issues

* Proactive can do attitude to all aspects of storage administration

* Excellent documentation skills

* Interest in new technologies and current trends in the IT industry

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

* NetApp storage filers and protocols used, especially NFS and iSCSI

* SAN storage, ideally HDS 99XX and Brocade

* Experience provisioning iSCSI/CIFS storage to Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms

Desirable

* Veritas Netbackup 7 (NBU)

* Experience of Red Hat Linux 5 and above

* TCP/IP Networking

* Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008 and above

* Scripting languages such as Perl, python, ruby, UNIX Shell Scripting (bash/ksh) - ability to build on and use Open Source tools/projects

* Experience with supporting Oracle and/or MySQL database platforms

* Experience with Xen or other virtual machine software
