This is not a Scripting/sysadmin job.
Our client, a digital start-up is searching for a progressive DevOps Engineer/Application Support with broad technology experience in Cloud Management who will help design the deployment and monitoring systems for the social marketplace solution that includes a both a rich web experience, as well as mobile capability. You will be part of an innovative, high-performance engineering team that is committed to delivering an application using leading edge technologies in the cloud and implementing best-in-software development craftsmanship.
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
* Take personal responsibility for the availability and reliability of our service.
* Save the company money on infrastructure costs
* Use tools that reliably manage infrastructure. We're looking for someone to write clean, re-usable code. Elegant OO code that's simple. This.is not* a Scripting/sysadmin job. Think configuration management in the 21 st century.
* Write maintainable code, working in a professional software engineering environment (with source control, dev/stage/prod release cycle, continuous deployment) - cowboy coders need not apply.
* Collaborate with software engineers to optimize for task performance, reliability, failover and scale.
* Establish monitoring practices. Provide expertise around infrastructure monitoring and transactional monitoring.
* Manage relationship with cloud providers (IaaS, PaaS, etc)
* Report on production environment metrics meaningful to the business. Think number of searches for Google, or number of flights booked for Expedia.
Qualifications:
* You know exactly how awesome it would be to create what's described above. You've been dreaming about the opportunity to work on something like this without the distraction of other stuff for years. This job description made you drool a little.
* You've "carried the pager" before (ideally at both a startup and a large infrastructure provider) & have first-hand experience with what happens when infrastructure/tools fail.
* A minimum of 3 years of coding experience (school counts). Much more experience would be great. What matters is that you've shipped and maintained mission-critical tools and infrastructure that many other people depend on.
* You work well independently and are confident setting the standards.
* Knows why and how to test monitors.
* 5+ years experience running production web systems in varied deployment environments
Pluses:
* You are conversant in the pros and cons of different clouds: EC2, Slicehost, Rackspace, Engine Yard, etc.
* You've poked around with projects trying to do infrastructure management (Rightscale, Cloudcake, Opscode).
* You read up on and experiment with new technologies because it's in your nature, not because it's a job requirement.
* You don't just learn how things work, you learn why.
* Formal training in computer science (bachelors, masters, whatever)
