ORACLE / SQL DBA Database Administrator - Oracle, SQL, 10g, 11g, RMAN, Linux, Windows

Priority is on the Oracle as they are heavily Oracle focused, (70, 30) but an interest or some experience with SQL Server is ideal too.

The role is a dual role with group wide responsibility to Group IT Operations and Architecture.

As a BAU / Project DBA within the SMG Core Infrastructure (CI) Section:
• To provide support and maintenance to the existing estate of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and other database products that underpin a wide array of business systems.
• To provide development support to the various delivery teams across the group including optimisation of SQL code.
• To monitor database performance and in conjunction with server and storage colleagues and implement measures to ensure optimal performance particularly on production databases.
• To maintain and implement real time error monitoring of all production, test and development databases
• To maintain and implement capacity planning / early warning to ensure necessary investment is controlled and managed.
• To mentor non-DBA colleagues in the system services and other BAU teams to reduce reliance on DBA resource for BAU database operational tasks.
• To provide support and management of the Oracle Database complimenting middleware offerings such as Portals and OBI.

As a virtual member of the Architecture team:
• To maintain a good awareness of industry trends around the relational database space with a particular interest in Oracle & Microsoft SQL Server
• To explore innovative methods to increase database performance and reduce costs
• To look for opportunities to increase ROI on existing database investment via consolidation
• To design and maintain a strategy for high availability database provisions.
• To design and maintain, a clear and common strategy for business continuity in the event of a disaster at any of the datacenter sites
• To roadmap the Database strategy, with a focus on increased throughput and resiliency against reduced cost.

Key responsibilities of the position:

1. The Database Administrator is responsible for Database support and development across the group with a particular focus on the London revenue capture and assurance applications (BGAN BSS, SAP, ESAS, RUBS, DWH) as well as the UCM provisioned web services. This consists of several production databases, each potentially augmented by several development or test databases.
The Database Administrator is a senior member of the section within SMG which provides and operates core or backbone infrastructure and platform applications within Group IT Operations. This infrastructure is currently defined as -

• Shared storage solutions (NAS, SANS and storage networks)
• Relational database instances, Oracle, SQL Server
• Shared processor solutions (VMWare, Solaris Zones, multiple application hosts)
• Shared Database or backend host solutions (Oracle, SQLserver)
• Shared or Enterprise authentication solutions (AIMs, Active Directory, RADIUS, LDAP)
• Core platforms (Solaris, Windows, RHEL)
• Shared backup and recovery solutions. (Netbackup)

2. The Database Administrator takes responsibility for the integrity of the databases that support the service infrastructure provided. The security and recoverability of systems, data and components is a key factor in judging whether GrIT/SMG meets its Service Level targets.

The CI Section achieves this by:
• Proactive monitoring and maintenance.
• Supporting the System Services Group
• Trouble shooting infrastructure problems.
• Regular reporting of status and trends in infrastructure performance/workload.
• Regularly reporting on the efficiency of section activities (time/activity breakdown, process improvement)
• Regular attendance at MRB's or other regular control functions (as directed by SMG Manager).

3. The Database administrator will on occasion be required to provide support to other components of GrIT globally as well as providing support to databases deployed by divisions other than GrIT, supporting GrIT's position as an IT "Centre of excellence".

4. The Database Administrator will be required to carry out Project actions as defined in Work packages both within and, occasionally, outside of their areas of principle responsibility. The post holder is required to be proactive and timely in highlighting issues preventing their ability to do this.

Essential knowledge and skills:

1. 3+ years as a production DBA with deep knowledge of both Oracle (> 10g) and ideally SQL Serve too, though will consider someone without SQL Server if they have an interest in it.
2. Knowledge and practical experience of working as a DBA in the following environments:
a. Solaris, Windows and Linux operating systems.
3. Understanding of enterprise Storage fundamentals SAN & NAS) in a DBA context
4. Knowledge of database clustering technologies, in particular Oracle Solaris Cluster and SQL Server clustering/mirroring.
5. Good knowledge of implementing and maintaining online database backup strategies using technologies such as RMAN.
6. Understanding and experience of implementing Database DR strategies.

Desirable knowledge and skills:
• Knowledge of PL/SQL or other DBA development toolset
• Knowledge of implementing database backups using VERITAS Netbackup
• Knowledge of Oracle Enterprise Manager
• Knowledge and experience of formal business operations procedures (e.g. ITIL)
