Linux Engineer.
Our Continuous Deployment Process team's key focus is to ensure that software is released in a consistent and repeatable
process across all technology environments to support the development and product launch goals of the Online & On Demand

Skills & Experience:

The Role in Context:
Job Purpose:

Working as part of the Online & On Demand Service Delivery team, this is a key role in the infrastructure and
applications that support ITV and ITV Player.
ITV and ITV Player are high traffic and technically diverse products and an important part of ITV's transformation and
strategic goals.
This role is responsible for integration, problem management and deep technical troubleshooting in the Linux and
networking environment as part of the 3rd line support function. Additionally this role will be a Linux/VOD specialist
within the team providing knowledge and advice to the support functions and project delivery teams.
This work may be project based or time critical, and can be hands on or in an advisory role. In order to drive quality,
the department has a specific focus on process automation. A background in Scripting, automation and centralised
configuration management is considered essential.
You will support the 1st and 2nd line support teams and ensure effective handover and knowledge transfer of new projects.
As part of a roster you will provide 3rd line on call escalation for major technical incidents that cannot be resolved by
the other support functions.
Effective communication of options to senior non technical staff and junior technical staff is fundamental to the success
of the 3rd line support function.
Accountabilities and responsibilities:
- Designing, administrating, and maintaining all components of a varied IT infrastructure.
- Primarily responsible for LAMP stack administration; strong familiarity with Linux tools and procedures required.
- 24x7 On Call responsibilities as part of an out of hours support roster
- Responding to Major Technical Incidents with detailed troubleshooting
- Build and support of development, functional test, integration, staging and production environments for ITV.
- Representing the Technology division within the business environment
- Supporting project delivery teams with integration activities for new services
- Supporting the project delivery teams with new infrastructure builds and application deployments
- Supporting the Service Delivery team with Change Management activities including patching, software releases and
hardware upgrades
- Supporting the Service Delivery team with Service Introduction activities including support modelling, availability and
capacity management
- Supporting the Service Delivery team with the on going maintenance, upgrading and refinement of system and application
monitoring tools
- Supporting the Service Operations team with detailed Root Cause Analysis and Problem Management activities
- Identifying and communicating improvements as part of a continual service improvement process
- Automation in all areas of the role where possible (eg Puppet, RPM)
- Able to effectively communicate situation reports upwards to senior management staff, and to peer-level and
junior-level technical staff
- Ensuring effective knowledge transfer into the 1st and 2nd line support teams
- Maintaining documentation where required
Person Specification:
Required Skills, Knowledge & Experience Essential:
- Experience supporting high traffic consumer websites
- Experience with configuring, administrating and detailed technical troubleshooting Video On Demand, Streaming and CDN
Technologies
- Operational experience in debugging RTMP
- Experience in administrating and troubleshooting VMWare, ESXi and related tools
- Experience in building and deploying RedHat Enterprise Linux (or a related distribution such as CentOS, Fedora)
- Experience in configuration and tuning Web server technologies Apache, nginx and varnish
- Experience in using Puppet

- Ability to make customer-affecting technical decisions
