DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN
DEPARTMENT OVRVIEW
The Design & Technology Department has four very well equipped workshops, a Technicians storeroom and the use of the Finlay Gallery for ICT lessons. All students from prep to third form study the subject and this is then followed by GCSE and A level as an option. The department is staffed by three full-time teachers and a part-time technician.

The Design & Technology Technician (DT Tech) is responsible to the Head of Design & Technology for all departmental/technical/teaching and routine day to day matters and to the Bursar for all individual, personal or contractual matters.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The duties and responsibilities of the Design & Technology Technician are analogous to the General Duties and Responsibilities under the NJC Conditions of Service.
Specific duties include the following, but are not exclusive, as advised under the General Conditions of Employment.
1. To conduct a regular check on all the consumables used in the department and to replace or repair where necessary.
2. To ensure that the stock levels are adequate and to order and check that deliveries are correct. Assist the Head of Department with the processing of invoices.
3. Assist the Department teaching staff by preparing materials used for student projects. This includes both the preparation of pupil's material requirements and the manufacture of jigs and fixtures when needed. The department uses a wide variety of different materials.
4. General maintenance on the hand tools, existing machines, furniture and fittings within the department. The department has a very wide range or machines, processes and hand tools as would be found in a well equipped Design and Technology department. When necessary, contacting and liaising with external suppliers/ contractors for repairs and maintenance.
5. Where necessary, assisting with the installation of new machinery, equipment, furniture and fittings within the department.
6. Advise and assist members of the Technology Teaching staff and students as appropriate with the use of any departmental machinery/resources in relation to tasks/projects that the staff member or student is working on.
7. Carry out other general administrative duties within the department as reasonably requested by the staff. For example - photocopying.
8. Advise the Head of Department, the Facilities Manager, the Health and Safety Officer and the Bursar on all Health and Safety matters which may affect Design and Technology at work. Ensuring that the annual Health and Safety Department policy is updated every year and any new directives on Health and Safety matters are applied.
9. Be prepared to attend any inset or external training courses as appropriate. For example, Health and Safety courses or Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) courses.
The technician is regarded as a crucial member of the team and we are looking for someone who has experience in this subject, is adaptable and has the initiative to solve problems as they arise. The post would suit someone from an engineering background.
Hours of work
Term Time only, 24 hours a week on days/times to be agreed with the Head of Department.
Person Specification
* Experience in Design and Technology essential
* An ability to use initiative to solve problems as they arise
* Knowledge of Health and Safety rule and regulations
* Ability to work in a methodical manner
* Can demonstrate attention to detail
* Must be able to work with staff and students on tasks or projects
An engineering or related background would be advantageous
